Skinwraiths are the remains of torture victims flayed alive on the rack, animated by their own pain and suffering. They appear as sheets of human skin flying along the ground, moaning softly in pain and self pity. Skinwraiths flit about the landscape, hunting for signs of life. If they sense a living creatures nearby, they fly at high speeds toward it, intent on smothering its life away. Skinwraiths are most often found near ancient torture chambers or abandoned prisons wherein captives were skinned alive.
The skinwraith attacks by smothering and enveloping its target, keeping other opponents at bay by lashing at them viciously with long strips of flayed skin.
Envelop: With a successful hold the skinwraith wraps around its foe completely, cutting off his air supply. The victim receives 1d4+2 points of damage from constriction and suffocation each round until the skinwraith is removed. Any attacks striking the skinwraith while it is attached to someone deal damage to both the skinwraith and its victim; each receive half the damage, rounded down. Anyone trying to remove a skinwraith once it is attached receives a –8 circumstance penalty to their grapple checks; if a hold is achieved, the skinwraith can be removed.
Improved Grab (Ex): A skinwraith that hits an opponent with its lash attack may attempt to start a grapple as a free action without drawing an attack of opportunity. If it gets a hold on a victim, it begins its envelop attack on the next round. The grapple modifier for the skinwraith is +2.
Weapon Immunities: The skinwraith, being made entirely of flat skin, is immune to damage from normal bludgeoning weapons. Enchanted bludgeoning weapons only deal damage equal to their magical damage bonus.
Undead: Immune to mind influencing effects, poison, sleep, paralysis, stunning and disease. Not subject to critical hits, subdual damage, ability damage, energy drain, or death from massive damage.
Due to their unusual shape and consistency, skinwraiths can be placed in many places other monsters or undead cannot reside. In fact, skinwraiths can be encountered in almost any setting, even underwater or high in the air. Skinwraiths also combine easily with traps, as they can be folded up and placed in small c o n f i n e d spaces. They may be placed in treasure chests or in sacks as well: always a fun way to surprise the party.
