Earl Novak Respen has worked all his life working for the Ierendi Tribunal of Ierendi, raising in rank and becoming one of its members. “Percival”, as his friends like to call him, lives in a mansion on the coast nearby ierendi City. His nickname comes for the love of books specially knightly adventure novels. He recently widowed and he and his wife never had children.
His title of Earl is a nobleman ranking above a viscount and below a marquess. He gained many of his titles and reputation for years of patriotic service and his refusal to accept any bribe. But the title of Earl was acquired in accordance to a very important deed he did in relation to the Alphatian Empire when he was able to save the them Ambassador and gain a lucrative trade route for Ierendi. The Alphatian Ambassador gave him the “Alphatian Honorary Title” of Earl and requested that the Ierendi Tribunal did the same. The title of Earl can be given to someone who has no lands, but the important thing is that it has been more than a hundred years that no one in Ierendi had a noble title honored and certified by the government of Ierendi. The title was given and the Tribunal crossed their fingers and wait for a people’s upraise that never happened. Respen was too loved by the people. The Ambassador that he saved was a younger Eriadna the Wise.
Recently, just before his 81 birthday, Earl Respen has decided to change everything he knows and does and become King of Ierendi. His great-grandfather was Admiral Ivanhoe “The Steel” Respen, hero of war and Admiral of the Ierendi Royal Navy. His grandfather was Judge Punzel “The Rock” Respen, who was notorious for his iron will and quick and fair brand of justice. His father was Percival “The Sword” Respen, a respectable and honorable Captain of the Ierendi Royal Guard and a member of the Adventurers Club Headquarters with a floor named after him.
” In accordance with the judgement of the Tribunal, the Council of Adventurers, and the Monarch of Ierendi, and so attested by the oath of Respen-ak-Tarpis, Draconic Earl, Prince of Arentela, a challenge is issued.
Earl Respen has agreed to meet any team of six adventurers in a contest, governed by the rules of the Royal Tournament of Adventurers. If the Adventurers win, the Earl has agreed to withdraw from the Annual Tournament of Adventurers. If the Earl wins, he may compete in the Annual Tournament of Adventurers, and the losing team is obligated for service to Earl Respen for a period not to exceed one year. “
Earl Novak Respen is… you know, a very good man. He has found a way, a loophole on the law, that allows him to compete on the Ierendi Royal Tournament at his age and with his position at the Ierendi Tribunal. The only way the Tribunal found to delay or stop him was to tie him up to a series of duels, six duels to be exact, found on an obscure law tome. If he loses more than half the duels, he has to retire and retire his nobility title. If he wins, he can compete on the Royal Tournament.
He is very old, and has become very lonely after the dead of his wife. He has a Quixote complex. He is very old and very good man, no one wants to do harm to him. He arrive to work in full plate armor.
